WHO

Waawaate Fobister is an actor, dancer, playwright, choreographer, instructor, and a producer. A proud Anishnaabe from Grassy Narrows First Nation. A recipient of two Dora awards for outstanding actor and play for Agokwe, Humber College outstanding actor, Mark S. Bonham Centre award from University of Toronto for their advocacy and public knowledge in sexual diversity. Waawaate has had numerous residencies as playwright and choreographer, including Banff Centre, Native Earth, Playwrights’ Theatre Centre, Playwrights Workshop Montreal and Magnus Theatre. Other work: Waawaate coordinated Canada’s first ever 2SLGBTQ+ Council for an Indigenous governing body at Grand Council Treaty #3. Waawaate served three seasons as curator for Indigenous Programming at Kick& Push Festival in Kingston.

 

Habesha/Filipina-Canadian multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Marisolle Negash is an independent R&B artist from Winnipeg, MB. With classical training in both voice and piano, she is equal parts powerful technique and fluid writer. Hooking her audience with dissonant harmony and poignant questions, she is a performer of vulnerability and abandonment. Debuting her work at the TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival in 2017, Marisolle has also been a frequent curator of music and live performance events in Winnipeg’s historical exchange district.

 

Kilusan and 393 Dance Troupe

Maribeth Manalaysay Tabanera aka Kilusan (siya/sanda/they/she/he) is a Tagalog Visayan filipinx non-binary multi-hyphenate artist, educator and community organizer. They were born and raised on Treaty No. 1 Territory (Winnipeg) and spent 35 years based in this community. They have presented their work as an educator, dancer, and DJ at events all over Turtle Island (North America). Maribeth is currently completing their Master of Education in Social Justice Education at the University of Toronto and working as a part-time Research Assistant with Elevate Equity. The 393 Dance Troupe was established in 2015 and is under Studio 393 which is a free youth-led arts studio & an initiative of Winnipeg’s Graffiti Art Programming Inc. dedicated to connecting emerging artists to each other and to community organizations that will help them grow as individuals and artists. The troupe consists of dedicated members that are committed to the growth and passion as dancers, artists, and choreographers. The troupe dances mainly Hip Hop but has branched out to other street dance styles and are proud to be representing Studio 393 and Graffiti Art Programming at festivals, showcases, and  community events across Winnipeg and Manitoba.
